Let me tell you why I hated Sunday's 'L Word' )

Don't want to talk to me about The L Word? How about some Chase? It's been 7 weeks since I've seen this kid. February 13th can't come soon enough.

Thanksgiving was eventful. There were two Thanksgiving dinners, lunch out with a college roommate, and my grandmother's 80th birthday party. The weekend also included pumpkin spice martinis. OMG YUM. I must make them myself. YUM.

(Friday night, when we were out drinking the pumpkin spice martinis, I was with my sister, brother-in-law, and my b-i-l's brother. Our waitress came over and said, "I'm sorry but I have to ask. Are you brothers & sisters? And you all dating?" Hahaha. I'm definitely not dating my sister's brother-in-law, who's married with a daughter, but I need to stop arguing that my sister and I look nothing alike.)

The adventure for the weekend came in two parts.

Part 1: I woke up Thursday with, what felt like, sandpaper in my eyes. I spent most of Thanksgiving day with tears running down my face and, on Friday morning, made my way to urgent care where the insightful doctor diagnosed me with an eye infection and gave me a prescription for MAGIC eye drops that fixed me right up.

Part 2: Friday morning, at 6am, my sister and brother-in-law woke up with a start, smelled smoke, and rushed downstairs to find the entire first floor of their house full of smoke. It must have been some kind of back flow from the fire we build that night. Whatever the cause (because the chimney guy couldn't find anything definitive) it was a stinky mess. I managed to sleep through the entire initial panic tucked in warm and cozy in my basement guest room. Yesterday, a disaster clean up crew spent 7 hours cleaning their house from top to bottom.

Now I'm home, awake from a 2 hour nap, and watching LotR while I get ready for tomorrow.

Moonshot is updated with 24 recs for November:
14 SPN
3 HP
2 SG-1
1 West Wing

PS. Here's Chase practicing one of many faces that manipulate us into doing his bidding.

Chase is through with surgery and doing well! He has an upper lip! And a real nose! \o/

I can't wait to give my sister a big hug.

Sci-fi is running a ST:TNG marathon this evening. \o/ Right now, I'm watching the episode where Picard & Wesley are trapped on a planet and Picard gets injured.

I had a great weekend. Friday night I went to happy hour and ended up drinking beer and tequila until 10pm when four of us finally decided to go get dinner. Beer, tequila, and mushroom ravioli in cream sauce = a perfect Friday night out. Saturday morning came quickly, though. I had plans to meet a friend and his daughter for breakfast at Zingermans at 8:45am. TOO EARLY. I came home and napped from 10:30am- 1:30pm and eventually made it to the gym to work off aforementioned beer, tequila, and pasta.

Today, I sat in a coffee shop and read for three hours and now Picard & Co. are entertaining me.

The unexpected part of the weekend came on Friday night when I found out a friend from work has been interested in me for a while and he finally got up the nerve to ask me out. I'm cautious about dating someone from work but definitely interested. Our first date is Tuesday night. :)

It's hard to believe November 10th is here but Chase's surgery is tomorrow. It's a 6 hour surgery scheduled to start at 10am. My sister is nervous and excited and I wish I was there to support her. I'm certain Chase will be fine but any positive vibes you can send his way are appreciated. He's such a little guy.

ETA: I loved this week's SGA. They were all AWESOME. Especially Ronon. And Teyla. This is officially my favorite Teyla episode.

I had the best weekend in NY. My sister and I laughed and laughed and laughed and I had a blast with Chase. His first surgery is scheduled for November 10th so, today, I ordered him a cleft palate bear. It should arrive just in time!

Here are four of my favorite recent photos. All of them are from this weekend with the exception of "Giants & Beer." (Click for larger images.)

Two more... )

I didn't check my time on the scoreboard but, at the 2 mile mark, my pace was a 10 min 15 sec mile and I think we actually stepped it up on that last stretch.

The race was the Big House Big Heart 5k to support ALS. It starts at Michigan Stadium and ends on the 50 yard line. Runners enter the stadium through the players' tunnel and, yes, I imagined I was about to win an Olympic marathon as I raced through.

Times will eventually post to the website and I'm sitting here refreshing constantly.

ETA: Time: 31:37.63 Pace: 10:11 Whoo hoo!

This afternoon, during Chase's 4pm feeding, my sister and I finally tried out the webcams. So much fun!! Chase was totally fascinated by me the movement on the computer screen and I had a blast watching him. We're going to try to do this once a week from now on.

I can't believe it's 7pm, though. Where did the day go!?!

It's going to be a lazy night. Yesterday I started reading The Alchemy of Air by Thomas Hager and I think that will occupy me for the rest of the evening. The book is about the two scientists who developed the process of creating fixed nitrogen from air and the impact to the world (more food, more weapons) and to their own lives. It's actually pretty fascinating.

Lazy weekend! I was sad to see it end! I woke up Saturday with a dutifully earned hangover and lazed about for most of the day. My evening included "A History of Violence" which remains one of my favorite movies. Sunday was equally lazy. I slept until after 10am, canceled dinner plans, and then napped from 2- 4:30pm. My big ambition was making it out for a run.

So, running...my favorite part is when I pass by other runners and we do that little hand wave, head title acknowledgment. Runner solidarity! I love it! I'm averaging about 10 minute miles on the road and 9.5 minute miles on the treadmill. I'm still at 3.5 miles/run and that's about where I plan to stay for the foreseeable future. It's long/far enough to be a substantial workout but not so far that I need to carve out an unreasonable amount of time to fit it in. What I really do need to do is get weight training back on my schedule.

I'm not through talking about RENT. Actually, I'm pretty surprised at the intensity of my reaction to the show's closing. Here are two more videos:

minni0612 pointed me this video of the final curtain call. Give it to about one minute in and then cast members, old and new, come out for one last emotional performance of Seasons of Love )

And timberho directed me to this video of RENT fans performing La Vie Boheme at the real Life Cafe the night before the show closed )

I'm sure everyone has seen the J2 pictures from the Red Bull Soap Box Derby but here they are, in my journal, too, so I can come back to see them again and again and again. Quite honestly, I rarely find Jared good looking but he totally does it for me in these pictures. I think it's the sunglasses.

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lilysaid, [livejournal.com profile] carta, and [livejournal.com profile] beatpropx for putting a smile on my face today. The power of memes!

It's two days until my England/Wales extravaganza with [livejournal.com profile] kiffle! I'm so ready!! Now it's just a matter of packing. (Kiffle - I'm bringing a casual dress for one night of the show and I plan to wear pants and a top the other. I'll be very casual when we go to Wales. And please tell me you'll want to nap when we get to Stratford!)

This post is getting longer than intended but I have to rec a fic I read last night: Kissing Lessons by [livejournal.com profile] dotfic It's a Supernatural/Some Kind of Wonderful crossover and it's Watts/Dean and it's spot on perfect. I'm flailing over this fic.

So, my nephew has this tape that holds the NAM in place. You can see it in this picture. Anyway, the hospital doesn't provide the tape in a ready to use form. My sister and brother in law have to create the tape strips with steri-strips and rubber bands and it's a long, involved process. They taught me how to make the tapes when I was visiting over Labor Day weekend so, when I got back to MI, I called the hospital and had them send me materials for 100 of these strips. I spent a good part of last week making them and the finished product arrived at my sister's house today. Surprise! \o/
Amazon bought Shelfari so I migrated all of my books to Library Thing. You can find me at saturn_reads.

I'm a bit torn over the decision because I prefer Shelfari and, right now, it's still free. For competitive reasons, though, I have a really hard timing supporting Amazon ventures so Library Thing it is. (I've also been waffling over how to use Library Thing/Shelfari for a while now. Part of me wants to try to load everything I remember reading [ever] but that's an absurd project. For now, it's books read in 2007 and on with the exception of series I started prior to 2007 e.g. HP and The Dark is Rising sequence.)

Anyway, hi! I'm back from my long weekend in NY. It was perfect and I'm very sad I'm not there right now. My sister is a fabulous host and an even better mother. We had so much time to just talk and be together.

Here. Have a photo of my nephew. )

And here, have a funny little rap about the Large Hadron Collider:

Also a Dr. Who fic rec:

In Another Life by [livejournal.com profile] sam_storyteller - Doctor 2.0/Rose, PG-13 Summary: An all-too-human Doctor begins to build a life with Rose Tyler, but old ghosts — both real and imagined — still haunt him. And there’s only so much human life you can live without a name...

And a West Wing fic rec:

That Way Lies Madness by [livejournal.com profile] ygrawn - Donna/Sam, Donna/Josh, PG-13 Summary: "For years, I thought we were friends because that was the closest we could each get to Josh. But that isn’t true. We’re friends because that’s the closest we can get to each other." This story is set post-series and is AU from about midway through season three. It's told from Donna's POV, a wonderful, mature, flawed Donna, and the character voices are fantastic. Ygrawn is a bit hard on Josh but I dare you to read this and not fall in love with the woman Donna's become and with Sam, oh, with Sam.

Now back to the ST:TNG marathon on sci-fi.

Kathy Griffin is fucking hilarious. I had NO IDEA.

So, the Olympics are over and I'm a bit lost because I've hardly watched TV all summer but binged over the past 2 weeks and now I'm not quite sure to do with myself. Let the flipping commence. I saw bits of the following: Elizabeth Weir's boyfriend tells her he found someone new, Daniel Jackson battles the Ori, a transsexual woman gets gang raped on L&O, Sam Beckett leaps into a chimp, Ken Mattingly gets exposed to the measles and Kathy Griffin makes me laugh and laugh and laugh.

Tomorrow, at 5pm, I am off to NY until Monday! \o/ I'm staying at my mom's tomorrow night but, after that, it's my sister and nephew's. (And brother in law's. Ha.) Thursday morning my brother in law is picking me up at my mom's and we're taking Chase into Queens to visit my sister at school. First visit! ANYWAY. I'm tremendously excited to spend all of that time with my sister and the BONUS is two days off from work. When you factor in Labor Day and ENGLAND/WALES (!!!), I won't work a 5 day week until the week of 9/15.

I'm in this weird sort of dating/pining/sexual identity thing right now which means, of course, it's got to get more complicated. On Sunday I went to brunch with two friends and then, later in the afternoon before dinner with the object of my affection, I hit up Plum Market. While browsing produce, this hot guy comes over to me and asks if I was, perhaps, at Zola for brunch earlier in the day. End of story: We have a date next Wednesday. Hahaha. He's very cute and e-mailed me right away and I'm going out with him because I have to find some pressure release for my current state of pining. Plus, cute.

PS. Even though I know Sam will leap out of the chimp it is VERY STRESSFUL to watch.

Hi! I'm back from NY and far too wound up for bed!

  • I have so much catch up from ComicCon. The BSG panel and Dr. Who and Torchwood and SGA and SG-1 and SPN and now I need to focus on Heroes, too, because BRUCE BOXLEITNER joined the cast!! A colleague was there for work and kindly sent me photos via his iPhone for the past few days but it wasn't quite the same (particularly because out interests differ) so tomorrow evening will be spent finding video and reports of all the goodness I'm sure occurred.

  • Today's flight home from NY was a HORROR. We boarded at 12:30pm for our 12:35pm flight and finally took off at 5:30pm. OH, MY GOD it was awful. The only bright spot was that my friend Anne waited on our dinner plans and I was still able to go over to her place for a home cooked meal and great company.

  • My nephew is the cutest little boy ever. I got to NY at 11pm on Friday and, after a run on Saturday morning, headed over to my sister's. My brother-in-law was out and about so it was just the three of us all day. I fed Chase and held him and gave him a bath and just basked in my sister. As a bonus, my sister ordered 4lb lobsters for us. YUM. PS. My sister looks amazing. After 7 weeks, she's within 8 pounds of her pre-pregnancy weight and she hasn't even been to the gym yet. It's astounding.

  • I'm sure there was something else. Oh! Dr. Who. I only have one episode left in season 1 and I have all sorts of things to say about Nine vs. Ten and Nine/Rose vs. Ten/Rose because I'm spending an absurd amount of time thinking about Dr. Who. But, really, what else is there to do when you're sitting on the runway for FIVE HOURS?

I'm back from my trip to NY/Baltimore and head over heels in love with my nephew. Chase is the cutest, littlest thing I've ever seen and my sister is a complete natural with him. It was one big love fest.

On Sunday I took the train down to Baltimore for a work conference which was, counter to expectations, tremendously productive. It was also frustrating as all hell. Always the mistress, never the bride )

  • SGA: In happy marriage news, David Hewlett wedding photos

  • Dr. Who: I LOOOOOOOOOOVED "Turn Left." Oh, Donna Noble. This show makes me so happy. (Before I start reading reviews, was the general reaction to the episode positive? I don't want anyone to harsh my squee.)

  • Torchwood: Have some great Gareth-David Lloyd links from !

  • And here are awesome photos of Viggo from CineVegas Film Festival and the set of Appaloosa.

  • I have three episodes left in s4 of Babylon 5. The last episode, Between the Darkness and Light broke my heart. :(

  • The fun part of this week's travel is tomorrow is already Thursday! Friday night I'm cooking crab cakes with friends and then, on Saturday, I have plans to see "Wanted" in the afternoon and "Wall-E" in the evening. Sunday I tackle my weeds.

ETA: I ran 5.5K today (\o/) and listened to the BSG podcast for "Revelations." Ron Moore & company were talking about the benefit of not plotting out the entire series ahead of time because it allows them to build on unexpected elements of the show. It was interesting to hear their perspective because, as a fan, I see both sides. On the one hand, I love that they have the freedom to surprise themselves and, by extension, us. On the other hand, there's something about knowing the plot has a course that gives me comfort in such a mythology based show. Look at the X-Files. What a mess. BSG hasn't let me down yet, though.

They also talked about how this idea of writing the series as it progresses applies to a particular plot point. )

    ( Jun. 20th, 2008 07:05 am)
I landed at JFK around 11pm and was in bed at my mom's house by midnight forcing sleep so today would come faster. Of course, like a kid on carnival day, I was up at 5:30am and now I'm just waiting until 8:30am when I can go to my sister's house and meet my nephew.

Later this afternoon, Chase's bris is back at my mother's house and tomorrow is day 2 of face to face aunt duty. \o/

The timing all worked out well because on Sunday I'm taking the train to Baltimore for a work conference and flying straight back to MI from MD on Tuesday.

Note to [livejournal.com profile] carta: I watched 04x16 before I left last night and downloaded 17- 19 for my iPhone so I can watch them while I'm traveling. It's all intense again! And worrisome! I don't think I can wait until Wednesday to watch the story progress. Garibaldi's such the wild card in all this.
I don't have an icon of pure glee. I'll need to get on that. In the meantime, I picked this icon because I'm an aunt to a little boy named Chase Steven!

    Chase Steven
    June 8th; 4 something am
    5 lb 11 oz
    17 3/4"

I love the name Chase and Steven is for my dad and my favorite person is now a mom.

The cleft was as bad as they expected but he has gorgeous eyes and such long fingers & toes!! I don't know if my sister wants photos of her baby out openly on the internet so, here, have the newest photo of David and Baz!

In other news, I finally caved yesterday and turned on the air conditioner only it's NOT WORKING. My home is 82 degrees and I'd like cool air from my vents, please.
