Let me tell you why I hated Sunday's 'L Word' )

Don't want to talk to me about The L Word? How about some Chase? It's been 7 weeks since I've seen this kid. February 13th can't come soon enough.

More photos! )
I'm so happy. I had one thing I needed to do for work today and it's DONE. \o/ Granted, I was supposed to be on vacation on Friday and tomorrow and that didn't materialize but, hopefully, I'll take a day on Tuesday. *crosses fingers*

Last night friends and I went to see "A Chorus Line" and it was not good. :( First of all, I can't believe how dated the show is. I still love the music but, wow, the show feels out of touch. Add to that horrible choreography and a mediocre cast and it was a bit of a disappointing night. RENT is coming to Detroit in February, though, with Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal, and I'm making plans to get tickets. RENT never disappoints.

In addition to getting my work done this morning I also caught up on the season premiere of The L Word. Perhaps this has been bandied about for years but it seems clear that Jenny has a severe case of Borderline Personality Disorder. This Time Magazine article on BPD reads like a case study on Jenny Schecter. It doesn't make me hate her any less, though.

Here's a happy making photo of The Doctor's companion in the Dr. Who Easter special. )

What a nice day. A bit of laundry. A trip to the gym and the supermarket. THAT'S IT. Awesome.

Happy New Year! Welcome to 2009! I was incredibly lazy last night. In fact, I think I was asleep by 10:30pm and I slept straight through until 9:30 this morning. I needed a break.

A friend is coming over this afternoon for omelets and mimosas and some lazing about. I probably should have taken tomorrow as a vacation day but at least it will be quiet at work and, tomorrow night, I'm cooking dinner for my friends Mike & Drew and Drew's boyfriend Paul. Lasagna!

This is the first year since 2001 that my family isn't going on a winter cruise. :( It's the right decision given the economy and the fact that they'd charge my sister full price for Chase but I'm starting to feel restless. I always appreciated the vacation itself but I don't think I fully appreciated how nice it was to get away for a week every year until now. As soon as I sell that damn place in Florida I'm planning a Mediterranean cruise.

Moonshot is updated with 9 recs for December:
4 SG-1
2 SPN
1 Dr. Who
1 Big Bang Theory
1 Appaloosa

I'm halfway through season five of The L Word and, in a recent episode, I saw "Kelly McGillis" listed as a guest star. It took me three full episodes to realize which actress is Kelly McGillis and it only finally clicked because I heard her speak without seeing her face. Did you know that Top Gun was released TWENTY THREE years ago? Wtf? Twenty three years!?! I don't think I've seen McGillis in anything since then (maybe Witness. when was that released?) and I was still expecting to see the Kelly McGillis who lost that loving feeling.

I don't think I've posted about my fantastic weekend in Chicago with [livejournal.com profile] carta and [livejournal.com profile] kiffle. So much fun! (Though I can't take them anywhere fancy. :p ) There was burlesque and deep dish pizza and Dr. Horrible and SO MUCH JUNK FOOD. Seriously. I think I ate an entire bag of jalapeno potato chips dipped in cheese sauce. I don't know what came over me. Perhaps it was fun and alcohol. Regardless, YUM. Plus there was mulled wine and Godiva hot chocolate with butter shots. Mmmmmm.

That's my story. I should probably clean up a bit before Kathy gets here at 1pm.
I'm just about through with season 4 of The L Word and it's safe to say I've never wanted to see harm come to a character the way I want to see Jenny eviscerated. She's such a self absorbed, manipulative, selfish fucking cunt. I hate her. I hate Bette, too, for being an elitist, controlling wench but my hate for Bette pales in comparison to the way I feel about Jenny. You might say The L Word elicits strong emotions.

On the flip side, I have completely come around to the cult of Alice. Same for Helena. Shane continues enthrall me, Papi's awesome, and Tasha rocks my world. Damn, Tasha.

I slept for 11 hours last night and now I'm contemplating a nap. At some point today, before Plum Market closes, I have to head out to buy cheese for a party tomorrow. That's it on my agenda, though. I have 83475436 books piled in stacks waiting for me. I'm hoping to finish The Age of Entanglement today and then get started on Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett. I joined a book club and MR is their January read.

But first, a nap.

Hello and Happy Hanukkah to anyone reading my friends list who celebrates. The holiday is off to fabulous start. First up, I have thank yous to [livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn and [livejournal.com profile] powrhug! Madelyn was my gift giver for [livejournal.com profile] hohohos and I now have an awesome string theory book as well as Forever on the Mountain by James M. Tabor. I think [livejournal.com profile] kaelie rec'd this book a few months ago. It's been on my wish list since then and now it's mine! From [livejournal.com profile] powrhug I have a gorgeous menorah pendant from an esty artist. The base is a scrabble tile and I love it. I'm going to wear it for all eight days of Hanukkah.

Last night I had a holiday dinner with my friends Anne and Jill. Anne had a menorah set up for me so, even though it was a night early, I was able to light the candles among friends. We had the yummiest dinner. Salad with avocado & crab meat, goat cheese & shrimp stuffed poblano peppers, and chocolate pecan pie for dessert. YUM. For Hanukkah, they had a star named after me!! YAY! I stopped at a frame shop today to have the certificate framed. It was such a perfect, thoughtful gift!

Today I met a friend (who thinks we're dating) for coffee and "Milk." Milk was fantastic. Sean Penn is so good that I almost don't give him the credit he deserves because I'm so used to see him completely melt into a character. I was supposed to go to a friend's solstice party tonight but his daughter is sick so I expect I'll binge on more of The L Word instead.

Call me shallow but Carmen is my favorite )

This clip is the best example of how Carmen combines sexy and adorable. (You'll get a "may not be suitable for minors" warning from Youtube so consider it NWS.)

Here's a link to video of Viggo on Bloomberg TV promoting "Good" which finally comes out 12/31. Between Milk, Frost/Nixon, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Good, my holiday movie season is set.

And I see that Sci-fi is running a ST:TNG marathon on Christmas day! I know how I'll be spending my morning. (though, bizarrely, the e-mail from sci-fi announced that there will be four new episodes. What?)

That's about it. Sundays are so much better when I know I'm off in the middle of the week and I get to see [livejournal.com profile] carta and [livejournal.com profile] kiffle when it's through. \o/

ETA: Apparently I posted this three times while I was writing. Oops.

I keep reading that a concern with Obama's likely appointment of Steven Chu as Energy Secretary is that he doesn't have a political background. I argue with two points:

a) When it comes to energy, Nobel Laureate scientist > Arnold Schwarzenegger. I LOVE that the (presumptive) nominee for energy secretary isn't just a political appointment. It's a practical appointment.
b) No one should discount the absurd political maneuverings required to succeed in the ranks of academia.

Tangentially related, Michigan State Picked for Half-Billion-Dollar Accelerator. \o/ The only thing better would be replacing "Michigan State" with "University of Michigan."

The new Sci-fi Magazine has an article of season 4.5 of BSG. I didn't read it because I'm spoilerphobic but I scanned it in the event anyone else is interested. (If you do d/l and read the article, please let me know if there are spoilers or if, at the very least, I can read the bits about the actors.)

[Tag line is blurred to avoid spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen 4.0.]

Download 11 pages of scans here: right click/save, zip file, 12.4mb, please comment if you download.

Also in the BSG world: BSG: The 13 minute recap. It's funny (and, actually, a good refresher). Spoilers through season 4.0. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] titti for the head's up.

[livejournal.com profile] arsenicjade tagged me to to talk about one thing that has made me happy for each of the last eight days.

Here I go starting today and working my way back... )

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] runerinrun, [livejournal.com profile] between_names, [livejournal.com profile] worldwouldend and [livejournal.com profile] cruisedirector for the holiday cards!!

I'm starting season 2 of The L Word tonight and then it's Grissom's penultimate episode on CSI. Tomorrow I'm off to NY for the weekend. My sister and Chase beckon!

Time names BSG's "Revelations" the #6 TV episode of 2008.

This makes me happy for two reasons:
1) BSG! I love when BSG gets recognition!
2) End of year lists! I love end of year lists!

Here's the list of all of Time's other lists.

Speaking of BSG, the first half of s1 of The L Word is a who's who in BSG. So far, though episode 01x09, I've seen:
* Michael Hogan (as Dana's father)
* Aaron Douglas (as a citizen who hates porn)
* Nikki Clyne (a the diver who picked up Jenny)
* Tahmoh Penikett (as a cop)
* Rekha Sharma (flirting with Shane in a club)

I went to Borders today to pick up The Dark Knight for a holiday gift exchange and Knuffle Bunny Too for a friend's daughter but both were sold out. WOE. An employee at the store told me they sold out of Batman by 3pm. The late bird gets nothing.

I haven't friended anyone new in ages and friending memes have been almost unilaterally disastrous for me so I leave you with a request. Here's my friends list. When you look at it, do you immediately think, "Why doesn't Saturn have [blank] friended!?! She's awesome!" If you have that reaction, please rec me that awesome person!

Off to a conf. call with Australia. Time zones are tricky.
