I think I read upwards of 100 resumes today and every time I hire I'm astounded at the resumes some people submit, particularly the cover letters.



Some tips:
1) Spell check. No, really.

2) Don't assme that a "sir" is reading your letter. You may end up with a chick for a boss.

3) When using Monster.com, include a cover letter and resume as a word document. It is so much easier to read. Easy to read = more likely to get a phone call.

4) If you know the company is not hiring for an executive position, do not enter "VP Sales & Marketing" under "Desired Job Title" and don't even try entering "100,000+" as your requested annual salary. Okay. Sure. The salary we posted was substantially lower than what you requested, but don't worry, it was just a guideline for you to work with.

5) Cover letter. Cover letter. Cover letter. And make it good.

6) "Someone suggested I apply for your open position." Okay. Great. Who suggested it? Did someone I know suggest it? Did monster.com suggest it?

7) "I know I don't meet your qualifications but..." Are you kidding me? Talk yourself up. I don't care if you've only worked summer jobs in college, find a way to apply it.

There are so many qualified and talented people who are out of work and putting time and effort into their job search. I don't understand how anyone thinks they'll get a job unless they join those ranks. It's hard enough as it is.

What these resumes and cover letters need is a good beta.
