Self-awareness is only useful when you actually use it to make smart choices.
The big choices in our lives can loom, cause stress, and consume us, but because of this, we spend time thinking them through and rationalizing our final decision. It's the small choices that can get us. The things we decide impulsively, without much thought, becuase at the time we don't see that the cumulative effect of these little choices can sometimes have a monumental, long lasting effect on our lives.
I never do it. So many times I want to give little bits of advice to strong candidates who just need a little polish in one area or another. Sometimes I want to give big bits of advice to job candidates who are walking disasters.
This morning I interviewed a young college graduate who was bright and energetic and has real potential. Her resume, however, was terrible. It was submitted via monster.com and she didn't attach it as a word document and she had no cover letter. In fact, the only reason I called her for an interview was because of the school she graduated from. Sometimes things like that stick out and I decide to give the person a chance.
Anyway, at the end of our interview, I asked if she would like a little free advice about job hunting in case the position with my company didn't work out. She took me up on my offer. So I feel good that I actually went ahead and gave her some tips.
12 interviews down. 2 to go. I actually extended an offer to someone today but I won't know if she accepted until tomorrow so I'm plugging away with the interviews.
PS- FUCK JIVE
