Cel and I were talking about this the other day and I've been thinking about it on and off since.

There are few boundaries on LJ. We talk about physical illness, mental illness, and our families in very personal and honest ways. We also write porn. Graphic, detailed, porn. Words like rimming and fisting flow easily and often, without embarrassment. But only when we're talking fiction.

Why are our own sex lives so taboo? Is it overflow from cultural norms where these things aren't discussed? Quite often we go well beyond the comfort levels of cultural norms on LJ. Why is this different? Is it a lack of interest in actually reading about our "friend's" sex lives? It seems to me that LJ would be the one place where people would talk about their experiences/preferences/challenges/delights.

I certainly don't have the answer. I know I never post about my exploits and I'm not sure I'm interested in reading details about anyone else's sexcapades. It's interesting to me, however, that, in what's often a sexually charged environment, we'll talk about anything and everything except our sex lives.
