I read Prisoner of Azkaban when it was first published and then again when it came out in paperback. When was that? 2001? I hadn't read it since and didn't prior to seeing the movie. I decided, before I go to see the movie again (again), I wanted to re-read the book to help me remember what differed between the two. I can't believe how many details I forgot.

** The scene at the Three Broomsticks where Harry learns about Sirius' history with his parents. It's so intense in the book...the importance of Sirius' role as the secret-keeper and Hagrid talking about meeting up with Sirius at the Potter's after Voldemort killed James and Lily.

** Lupin coming for the Wolfsbane while Harry is in Snape's office. That could have been one of the best scenes in the movie.

** Maurader's Map, Moony, Padfoot, Wormtail, and Prongs, Harry's Patronus, blah, blah, blah, said it all before.

** Snape! Snape was the gittiest of all gits. Totally underused. At the very least, Lupin should have said that it was Snape who revealed his condition. And we missed out on so much of Snape's animosity toward the marauders and, by default, Harry. In the movie, he was almost likeable by comparison. Give me my Snape! (Though I'm glad he didn't shriek in the movie like he does in the book. I know it's canon and all but my Snape doesn't shriek. He bellows.)

It wasn't all that much but I do think it would have added a lot. I can't possibly see how they're going to make GoF into one movie and keep the majority of the key plot points.

The other bit that I was thinking about when I finished PoA is Dumbledore's treatment of Snape in the book. At this point, we don't know that Snape is spying for the Order. We're not sure of his motivations aside from his hatred of James, Sirius, Lupin, and Harry. Yet Dumbledore belittles Snape in front of the Trio. He never outright lies but he aims to confuse Snape in front of Snape's students who know better. "'That will do, Severus,' said Dumbledore quietly. 'Think about what you are saying. This door has been locked since I left the ward 10 minutes ago. Madam Pomfrey, have these students left their beds?'" and "'Well, there you have it, Severus,' said Dumbledore calmly. 'Unless you are suggesting that Harry and Hermione are able to be in two places at once, I'm afraid I don't see any point in troubling them further.'" Dumbledore is a bit Machiavellian. His conversations with Snape read so differently after reading books 4 and 5.
