Happy New Year!
It's been many days since I've posted because I've been playing host to
stargems since Friday night. She's currently asleep in the guest room recovering from our ability to turn a whole lot of nothing into a whole lot of something.
So far, there have been two movies, "Juno" and "Meet the Savages." Juno is one of the best movies of the year...of EVER perhaps. I give it two thumbs up and five stars and an A+ and the top of whatever other rating scales there are! If you're home today with no plans, go see Juno.
We saw Meet The Savages at the Michigan Theater last night before dinner. It's an old, membership driven theater that doesn't sell advance tickets and has all of the old style trappings complete with a piano player, clad in a tragic iridescent shirt, performing for the audience before the show in lieu of on-screen dancing hot dogs. I am far less enthusiastic about Meet The Savages than I am about Juno. It depressed the hell out of me.
On Sunday (?), Stargems helped me pick out a new coat and it's everything I didn't know I wanted. I knew I was looking for a fitted wool coat but I envisioned black and certainly not all of the awesome detailing. See?? I'm already strutting around like a peacock in the coat and reveling in my first compliments.
Other highlights of the long weekend include the Patriots/Giants game. OMG THE TENSION. Stargems is a Giants fan and I'm a sucker for stories like a perfect season (and a sucker for Tom Brady) so it was the perfect, nail biting evening. Today though, and even better, is the Michigan/Florida bowl game. It's like it was delivered into our laps just for this visit.
It snowed at least 6 inches last night and my neighbors are out with their snow blower. I'm sitting in my living room with every possible hope that they come down my way. I don't Stargems wants to be out shoveling show later. ;)
In other business,
between_names posted a meme and I played so it's my turn to offer up the same and post my answers.
1. Leave me a casual comment of no particular significance, like a lyric to your current favorite song, your favorite kind of sandwich, or maybe your favorite game. Any remark, meaningless or not.
2. I will respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
3. Update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. Include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in your own post.
5. When others respond with a desultory comment, you will ask them five questions
1. What's been your biggest challenge since leaving college?
Hmmmm. I think it was making the decision to move to FL. I loved being back home in NY and I love NY and I really had to weigh some long term goals for myself. The move to FL was for my career vs. staying in NY which was for much more personal reasons.
2. How did you spend your 10th birthday?
I have no idea! I think my 10th birthday was a movie birthday. We all came to my house for presents and food and then went to see the movie Baby. (The one about the dinosaur.)
3. You can have 5 CDs on repeat for eternity, but only those 5. Which are they?
That's really tough.
i. Indigo Girls burn mix. I'd keep it to 15 tracks but I'd need my favorite of the Indigo Girls, for sure.
ii. The soundtrack to "The Big Chill." Awesome music that I can listen to over and over again.
iii. I'd need something to move to so I'd probably take a Basement Jaxx CD.
iv. Madonna's Immaculate Collection
v. Because I'm so in love with it right now, the Alison Krauss/Robert Plant CD.
4. What prompted your interest in space?
One of my memories of my father is watching ST:TOS with him on WPIX 11 and the only t-shirt of his that I have is an old Star Trek t-shirt. (The Enterprise is orbiting earth and there's a dialog bubble that says, "Beam me up, Scotty. There's no intelligent life on this planet." When I discovered ST:TNG, I started watching because I knew my dad would love it. At the time, I didn't consider myself a sci-fi or space fan but I very quickly fell in love with both the genre and the reality of space travel and the physics that surrounds it.
5. You get to pick your sister's baby's name: what is it?
Fun question!
Girl: Madeline Rose
Boy: Malcolm Steven
Also, mostly for me, my top three books and movies of 2007. I tried to pick 5 but the top three are such standouts for me that I stopped there.
Three favorite books of 2007:
1. Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows by JK Rowling
2. Einstein: His Life and Universe by Walter Isaacson
3. Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert (I believe this was written in 06 but I found it in 07.)
Three Favorite Movies of 2007
1. The Bourne Ultimatum
2. Eastern Promises
3. Juno
I'm off all week which is full of fabulous. Aside from a few necessary errands, my plans include reading some books, reading some fic, and finishing season two of Bones. Joy!
