I decided that, instead of keeping a written journal like I normally do on long vacations, I'll make use of my cousin's internet and get it all down this way instead...if the French keyboard setup doesn't kill me first.
First. A French accent automatically makes a man exponentially sexier. It may be some kind of international rule. Love the men.
The flight was fairly terrifying but Lex held my hand and sang to me and we landed safely in Paris at 7:30am. Rather than take a cab to the airport, we took the RER and then the metro to my cousin's place in the 3rd district. Everything is so quaint and the streets smell like pastries and fresh baked bread. Her area is right in the center of Paris and incredibly convenient for playing tourist.
We took a three hour nap when we finally got to H's place and, by 5pm, were ready to head out. The first thing we did was go to the market to buy breakfast food and some snacks. Even getting milk was an adventure. And I was not at all impressed with the grapes. ;)
From there, we walked to the 5 train and headed toward the Eiffel Tower. On the way to the metro, we saw wonderfully talented street performers and a stand on the street where a man was selling fresh oysters. And the shopping! I will not go into debt. I will not go into debt. I will not go into debt.
It was a short ride to the Eiffel Tower and we arrived just after sunset. I think that was when it hit us that we are really here. We got chocolate crepes from a street vendor and then waited on line to go up. It's just incredible. It's exactly as you imagine, only larger and more majestic. After sunset, every hour on the hour, the Eiffel Tower lights up with beautiful twinkling lights. I can't wait to see it from a distance.
Lex and I went to both the second level and the top level and were treated to unbelievable views of the city. It was the perfect introduction to Paris. I can't wait to share some of the photos.
From there, we headed to dinner, splitting another chocolate crepe on the way. (I think they may be a weakness.) Dinner was at an outdoor bistro on the Champs Elysee, just past the Arch de Triumph. Again, I think the shopping here may do me in.
It was an exhausting day but we are just buzzing with energy.
Tomorrow...the Louvre and more. Now...bed. I'm sated and exhausted.
1) Landing safely
2) My cousin's hospitality/a wonderful traveling companion
3) Little children speaking French
4) The opportunity to experience the Eiffel Tower
5) Street vendors who sell crepes. Mmmmm.
