Another perfectly charming day. Do I really have to come back?
We had a lazy morning breakfast with my cousin and her fiance before we headed to the train to Versailles. It was misting when we left so we brought out umbrellas to be safe but, eventually, the day cleared up.
What can I possibly say about Versailles that does it justice? The chateau is massive and palatial and everything you'd expect from Louis XIV and Louis XV. I took the audio tour so I could learn as much as possible about the rooms we visited and, as always, it was worth it. Lex was very patient as I listened and listened and listened and listened. Afterward, we spent some time wandering around the grounds which are almost as impressive as the chateau itself.
Lunch was in town. A quick stop for paninis where the French music was interspersed with none other than our own Mr. JT. Lex and I may have startled the other patrons with our outburst but it was surprising to hear him on the radio in a small Versailles restaurant. The kid is everywhere. But I think we knew that.
After lunch, we headed back to Paris to visit the Musee d'Orsay. This museum has a phenomenal collection of impressionist paintings: Degas, Monet, Cross, Renoir, Van Gogh, Manet, Pissarro, Cezanne, Mondrian, Gauguin, et al. I wrote down the names of some of my favorites so I can buy prints when I'm back in the States. The other impressive thing about Musee d'Orsay is the building itself. The museum was once an old train station. It's spacious and very easy to navigate (though a bit crowded by the most well known works).
It was early when we left the museum so we took a couple of hours to walk home via the Seinne and Rue de Rivoli. I found some great shoes and a fantastic red silk outfit but ended up leaving the stores without either. The shoes cost 2x what I originally thought and both the pants and the shirt will have to be hemmed if I get the outfit. But there's always Friday and Saturday if I change my mind. (As an added treat, one of the shoe stores was playing Justified. Everywhere. He's everywhere!)
Tonight we are having baguette and brie and wine and grapes for dinner. We stopped and purchased everything on our way home. The brie even came from a small Fromager in the neighborhood. I've been waiting for this all vacation!
Tonight it's early to bed so we can catch a 7:15am train to London tomorrow morning. Huge advance thanks to
english_muffin for hosting us!
