A guy at work is a huge HP fan and, once or twice a week, we have discussions about the books, movies, and characters. Yesterday, we started talking about Snape and he said that he doesn't understand why I like Snape so much. He's almost entirely unlikeable and impossibly menacing. I countered a bit but had to eventually stop because I realized that much of my perception of Snape is extrapolation from canon most often based on characterizations in fan fic that strike a chord. My Snape is harsh with rough edges but there are layers that can be drawn out. As much as he gives, he'll never soften entirely. His kindnesses are in small, unspoken gestures. I believe this about the character but can't easily defend it to someone who's fandom is based entirely in canon. It was interesting to realize that, although we share a fandom in common, it's not exactly the same fandom. And it goes beyond the slash. It's down to characterizations and perceived relationships between characters.

So, all of that said, a rec: Benediction by Ellen Fremedon. Snape/Lupin. I believe this Snape entirely. Remus, too. It's a gorgeous piece.

Anyway, I canceled plans tonight because Sally is sick. Two immunizations today and she still has worms so there was a pill for that. Now something's wrong with her eye. It's red and oozy and she's having trouble keeping it open. Plus, I found fleas. So I went to Pet Smart and treated the fleas and I'm watching her eye. She's just the cutest thing. I hate to see her uncomfortable.

Oh! And I sold my soul to Tyra Banks today. A full day of "America's Next Top Model" on VH1. Ten hours of the show. It's absurdly addicting. Good thing Lost isn't on Wednesday night. I've got to watch the final episode!
