I binged on Torchwood over the past few days and I'm now all caught up through 02x04, "Meat." YAY! Torchwood for the win!
Just, in general, I'm totally a sucker for any kind of "out of time" episodes. That's true for most sci-fi series but it particularly pleases me here. "Out of Time," "Captain Jack Harkness," and "To the Last Man" are my clear favorites.
Reading my friends list over the past year, I thought that Jack & Ianto had some big epic love affair but, honestly, if I hadn't known it was coming, that kiss at the end of "End of Days" would have completely taken me by surprise. Maybe that was the point. But I thought the Captains Jack had far more chemistry than Jack & Ianto. Perhaps it's just one of those differences when you watch a show after it's aired vs. in real time.
Similarly, having watched "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" first and based on the scene where he finds out she's engaged, I thought there was going to be some crazy tension built up between Gwen and Jack but they totally have a brother/sister vibe to me. And not an incestuous brother/sister vibe. No doubt Gwen's got issues in her relationship with Rhys and I can see where her devotion to Jack is part of the problem but, for most of the first season, I didn't get sexual tension between them.
Despite the prior two paragraphs, it's actually not the relationships that please me most about the show. I just love the whole premise and the team and how flawed they all - dedicated and confused and longing for more than they have but not sure how to find it in the midst of this job that's their life, their whole life. Plus there are aliens and time rifts and lots of great run-ins with the '40s. Some misses, for sure, in the first season (hello, "Cyberwoman") but, I'm hooked. \o/
In summary, "Cyberwoman" is one of the worst episodes of television I've ever watched but I'll forgive Torchwood because, overall, it's A+ awesome.
PS. Where is the Captain Jack Harkness/Captain Jack Harkness fic. Please tell me it's out there and it's good!
