Anamchara and Kiffle are asleep. Carta is in the shower. I spent half the night dreaming about BSG and might implode if I don't get some of this down. Not that I know where to start.
The finale was infinitely more satisfying and, remarkably, even more emotional that I expected. I loved it. I loved it.
I didn't expect, at all, that the show would end on a hopeful note but I'm so, so glad it did. The shot of Adama on the hillside, looking out of the landscape, took my breath away. There was true closure for all of these characters I love - even if it wasn't necessarily the closure I hoped for (ROSLIN).
Okay, so, before I get into anything else I need to say that I'm heartbroken over Roslin's death. I knew it was coming. We all did. BUT STILL. I sobbed. Her journey, and the love story between Adama & Roslin, was one of my favorite elements of BSG and, even though I knew it wasn't going to end with their happy ever after, I was still hoping it would. They way it played out was beautiful. I question Adama's choice to stay away after he lets her go and says his goodbyes but I believe that he's living for both of them now and that's amazing.
The whole episode was beautiful, really. That space battle was stunning. I couldn't get over the images and shots and the colors. WOW. I loved the sight of the humans going to battle with Centaurians and also the image of Centaurian battling Centaurian. I loved the Boomer made a choice and, just after she died when you could almost forget who she was, they took you back to the beginning of her days on Galactica and made you remember that this is Boomer.
An element of the show I loved, that played out so clearly here, is the idea of free choice and how simple decisions can lead to monumental implications. Adama's decision to stay with Galactica. Roslin's decision to join the campaign. Baltar's decision to give Caprica a peek into the defense mainframe. Biggest of all, in some ways - Tory's decision to murder Cally. That wasn't something I expected to see resolved and the fact that it was the final catalyst that lead the fleet to "Earth" is really something. If she hadn't done that, Chief wouldn't have broken the connection and the entire history of humans and cylons would have been different. Loved it.
Other things I loved:
* the image of the final five on that landing mirroring the veiled image of the final five in the opera house.
* Tyrol's decision to go off on his own. It's sad that he's done with people but of course he's done with people. In my mind, he meets some primitive norwegian woman and they start their own line of hybrids. :)
* Baltar's, "I know something about farming." I went into this episode convinced that he hadn't grown at all through the series and how wrong I was. How very wrong and and glad I am for that. After a useless fourth season for Baltar, he stepped up here and FINALLY grew. I liked Caprica's line, "I always wanted to be proud of you."
* Starbuck. What is she? For certain? I don't know. But I like the idea that she was sent back by the higher power that's watching the humans and cylons and was able to complete her mission. Now she can be with Sam. I think she was a whole different form of the head characters. An even cooler one.
* "Earth." First of all, I am over the moon that the humans & cylons are our ancestors. WOO! More than that, though, I love that Earth was more than the charred planet the found and was, in the end, and idea. \o/
* SAUL TIGH ROCKS MY UNIVERSE. How did such a cantankerous bastard become one of my all time favorites? SAUL TIGH + ELLEN TIGH? EVEN BETTER.
The only thing I didn't love was RDM's cameo. It was unnecessarily self-serving. But whatever. He can have it. I loved this show. I miss it already.
I'm sure I'll have more to say in the near future but that's what I've got for now.
As per usual, here's Maureen Ryan's commentary.
