I am so glad that I reserved judgement on Kevin until after I saw him in "Chicago." He was fantastic. And, though I was not a fan before, I now have all sorts of levels of adoration for the guy.
He's one hell of a performer. I was so impressed with Kevin's performance. He can sing. He can sing very, very well. And I thought truly he got the nuances of Billy Flynn. Did I mention he can sing? Quite well?
But the reason why I respect him is that he took time to speak to each and every fan who was waiting for him.
stargems and I waited for almost an hour for him to come out of the theater. My other friends bailed and went to the Crown Plaza bar but we decided to hang tight. When Kevin came out, he not only signed autographs but engaged everyone in a personal conversation and took a picture with anyone who asked. When I spoke to him about my previous experiences with "Chicago" (the musical) and told him how impressed I was with his performance, he stood holding my hand. He gave hugs. He got kisses. And he spoke to four people on fans' cell phones. Kevin was outside for a good half hour before he left the theater. I was blown away by his generosity.
It was very intersting for me because, between August and December, I practically lived at the Nederlander. By October, I didn't stand at Joey's barricades much because there were other opportunities, like Suede, to actually hang out with him, but I did watch his interaction with the fans. I always thought that Joey was wonderful for the time he took but, honestly, Kevin blew him away in that department.
Perhaps part of the difference is the duration of their runs in their respective shows. It is clearly more draining to keep up that level of enthusiasm and engagement for 5 months as opposed to 2 1/2 months but still...
Regardless, seeing everyone waiting for Kevin made me miss Joey in huge ways. I think I whimpered to
stargems about it for a bit. It was one hell of a ride with Joey. He's one in a million.
I took a lot of pictures. I even got one of Kevin and
stargems which I'm sure she'll post at some point. He's a striking man. Here are a few of the pics:
